VOCOPRO & BMB CDG 3000


PLAYING IN BLACK & WHITE

This fault is only relevant to PAL specification players being played on PAL monitors/TV's (As far as we know). It has been found that a faulty batch of timing crystals is causing some of these players  supplied late 1997 to display in black & white, ie. not in colour. The crystal in question is labelled 'X2' and is located on the small PCB, centre rear of the machine. This should be replaced by a crystal of the same frequency (17.34475 MHz) which should cure the fault.

NOTE:  If the player is still under its warranty period this job should ONLY be carried out by a competent electronics engineer, as ANY damage caused will not be covered under warranty.

LATTER MODELS HIGH NOISE LEVEL

Latter models of the CDG-3000 (serial no. from 984xxx and higher) have a higher than normal noise level present on their output, this is due to a modification in the circuit to bring the microphone level up to match that from the CD's, this has been achieved by increasing the gain in the latter microphone stages, which are also amplifying noise introduced at the earlier stages.

This noise can be reduced by shifting the additional gain required to the primary stage. The gain reduced from the latter stages is approx 3, with primary stage gain increased by 2, with a significant reduction in noise output.

The microphones section can be removed completely from the audio circuit by the cutting of the C48 capacitor lead located to the front of the main board.

Modifications are made on the main karaoke circuit by adding in parallel, 56K ohm resistors to R41 & R42, and 8k2 ohm resistors to R7 & R8. The resistors added to R7/8 can best be achieved by connecting them from R8's left hand leg (ground point) to U1 pin 6 and U1 pin 2.

ALTERNATIVELY  To isolate the microphone stages cut a leg of C48 (main board front left, 5cm behind echo level control)

LASER ASSEMBLY TYPES USED

Two different models of laser assembly have been used along with differing slide and gear parts, ie different laser mechanisms, these are interchangeable with minor modifications to the CD-PCB (on top of the mechanism). The original laser assembly is a Sanyo SF-91 5/8 pin model the latter models use a Sanyo SF-P101 model. To convert Mk1 to Mk2 change:
   

                           

R174 & R182 from 22k to 39k ohms

 

R175 from 22k to 47k ohms

 

C108 from 300pf to 220pf.

 


VIDEO OUTPUT FORMAT

To convert a PAL board for NTSC or ad the components to allow switching, on the small video board approx 5cm (2") sq  PCB to the rear of the mechanism, add the following parts:
 

                        R1 = 1M ohm R2 = 470 ohm (as R7)
X1 = 14.31818MHz       C5 = C6 = 50pf

Two video board versions have been produced (to Jan 2002) a MK 1 with a wire link, and a MK 2 with an unused 3 pin connector in place:

Mk 1 board switching - Insert switch into link position, (Closed = PAL).

Mk 2 board switching - Insert missing wire link, desolder unused connector links & switch pins 2/3, (Closed = PAL).

Display lamp voltage = 18V DC (taken from across C101)

To isolate Microphone stages cut leg of C48 (main board front left, 5cm behind echo level control)

RF level (HF TP) level with SF-P101 laser assembly = 2.5V pk-pk with slight roughness

 

E-F BAL preset: In play mode skip forward or backwards and observe the tracking error waveform at TEAO, set its centre point slightly negative with respect to Vref (TEAO == front lead of C113, Vref == Rear lead R110)
